A very 2021 way to celebrate divorce: lawn signs

by | Jun 15, 2021 | Divorce

Emotions vary during and after divorce. You might go back and forth between mourning the end of your marriage and celebrating it. Eventually, you will accept that your marriage is over and be prepared for the next phase of your life.

Not everybody feels like celebrating their divorce. But those that do have had to get creative over the last year or so. Instead of marking the finalization of their dissolution with a big party or an overseas vacation, they might have posted something on their social media. Or bought a huge lawn sign.

Last year, you probably saw front lawns throughout Northern Virginia decorated with signs celebrating birthdays, graduations, and other milestones we could not get together to mark. In addition to putting up lawn signs in honor of these traditionally celebrated events, it appears many Americans posted signs announcing that they had gotten divorced.

Viral divorce lawn signs

Down in Tennessee, a couple of recently divorced people’s divorce lawn signs went viral online. In one of the viral photos, a man is posing in front of a 10-foot wide sign that reads, “Finally Divorced” and “Straight Outta Marriage.” Images of sneakers, whiskey and balloons decorate the sign.

The other sign read “Divorced AF,” and was a gift to a divorcing man from his friends. The person who made the sign said the friends were looking to cheer up the man. The sign ended up all over TikTok and was featured on the TV show Tosh.0.

Whether you choose to celebrate the completion of your divorce is up to you. Just remember that if you share kids with your former spouse, anything you post online or put up on our lawn may come back to haunt you later if a court feels it impacts your kids or you co-parenting.  And ultimately, the most important thing is that the details of your settlement are ones you can live with long-term.
